Awards Vs. Assessment

Progress That Continues Beyond the Awards Stage

The AFLV Awards + Assessment program is built on two equally important goals: recognizing excellence and supporting continuous growth.

While awards celebrate the outstanding work happening within fraternity and sorority communities, the assessment process provides meaningful feedback that helps councils strengthen their leadership, programming, and impact long after the application cycle has ended.

Only Council Compass submission receives individualized feedback from trained volunteer reviewers with experience in fraternity and sorority life. Their observations and recommendations are designed to help councils reflect on their accomplishments, identify opportunities for growth, and continue building stronger communities. Many councils find that the feedback they receive becomes a roadmap for strengthening their community long after the application cycle has ended.

Council Compass Consultations

Councils that attend AFLV Central or AFLV West have the opportunity to participate in a 15-minute, one-on-one assessment consultation with a member of the Awards + Assessment review team.

These conversations provide an opportunity to:

  • Ask questions about your feedback

  • Better understand reviewer comments

  • Discuss ideas for future growth

  • Explore strategies for strengthening your council and future submissions

Assessment consultations are designed to turn feedback into action, helping councils make the most of the review process.

We are also exploring virtual consultation opportunities for campuses unable to attend an AFLV conference.

Recognition at AFLV Conferences

Outstanding submissions for Council Compass, Marketing + Media Showcase, and Individual Awards are celebrated during the awards banquet at AFLV Central and AFLV West.

Recognition includes:

  • One Star Recognition – Councils are acknowledged through on-screen recognition and announcements during the awards celebration.

  • Two Star Recognition – Councils earning Two Star recognition, along with Marketing + Media Showcase recipients, are recognized on stage and receive a certificate.

  • Three Star Recognition – Councils earning Three Star recognition and Individual Award recipients are recognized on stage and receive an AFLV award trophy.

  • Overall Council Awards – Councils earning Three Star recognition in all four Council Compass categories and receiving the highest overall evaluation within their peer council category receive an Overall Council Award.

In addition, councils that submit Awards + Assessment applications receive reserved seating for their delegation at the awards banquet.

Beyond the Event

The Awards + Assessment program is designed to have an impact that extends well beyond the conference experience.

Many councils use reviewer feedback to guide strategic planning, improve officer transitions, strengthen collaboration, enhance educational programming, and establish goals for the year ahead.

When viewed as a developmental process—not simply an awards program—Awards + Assessment becomes a powerful tool for building stronger leaders, stronger councils, and stronger fraternity and sorority communities.
