Presenter Resources & FAQs
Whether you are submitting a proposal to present for the first time, or you’ve presented at an AFLV conference before, we have some helpful tips and info to make your proposal the best it can be!
Things to COnsider
Demographics: The audience at AFLV Central and AFLV West is made up of about 80% undergraduate students and 20% campus and headquarters professionals.
Focus on the Fraternity/Sorority Experience: As leaders of their organizations and councils, students are looking for tools to be better in that context. Whether you are presenting on mental health, safety, or organizational growth, students need the resources to improve their chapter and community with the information!
Types of Leaders in Attendance: Student leaders in attendance can range from emerging, first-time leader to experienced multi-year officer. Their experiences, insights, and questions will differ accordingly! Undergraduate student attendees often hold chapter or council leadership positions, and represent College Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations.
Varying Campus and Community Size: The campuses attending our conference are incredibly diverse in experience and size. Our smallest campus represented has 1,500 students, while our largest has 30,000+. Similarly, some campuses have 2-3 chapters on campus, while some have 60+.
Presenter Tips
-
Review AFLV’s Content Priorities and Topic Areas
The educational experience at both AFLV Central and AFLV West is designed in an intentional way to meet the needs of students and professionals in this space. Ensure your content has a clear connection to at least one priority area.
-
Keep it Fresh
While some key educational topics for students have remained the same over time, be sure it’s up-to-date for students in 2025! If you’ve presented this session at previous conferences, adapt it for today’s student leaders.
-
Engage With Your Attendees
Students learn best when they connect with their presenter and have fun. Be yourself and find ways to be engaging!
-
Stay Focused
Don’t try to cover too much information. Focus your presentation on the key outcomes of your program.
Presenter Expectations
You Must register for the conference
All presenters must be registered for the conference. We recommend registering by the early-bird deadline to ensure the best price.
Every session must include a learning guide
You will upload your guide through a form provided by AFLV in the weeks leading up to the conference.
Learning guides can include fast facts, reflective questions, etc.
This is not the space to include presentation slides. The event is just the beginning for attendees. We must equip attendees to lead conversations at home.
Inclusive Language
Sessions that are applicable to all attendees must use inclusive language.
See our inclusive language primer.
Session Logistics
Length
At AFLV Central and AFLV West, we will have breakout sessions that cover the two time durations below.
In either case, we are asking you to dedicate 25% of your session to participant interaction, discussion, reflection, or application.
This research suggests that taking time for these things ensures that the session content is more likely to be retained and “stick” with the participants:
60-minute sessions | limit to 45 min of content delivery
75-minute sessions | limit to 56 min of content delivery
Format
Actionable
Provide concepts and resources that can be put into action. Avoid philosophical spitballing.
Focused
Don’t try to accomplish too much. Avoid content that is a “mile wide and an inch deep.”
Interactive
Participants crave discussion and often share great ideas when they’re given the chance.
